Mary Wheeling earned her Ph.D. in English from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1994 and has fifteen years of college teaching experience. In 1998, she authored a literary biography, Fighting the Current: The Life and Work of Evelyn Scott (LSU Press) and also has published articles, chapters, reviews, and encyclopedia entries on literary topics. (Prior to 1999, she wrote under her former name, Mary Wheeling White.)
Mary’s teaching experience ranges from literature and literary criticism to grammar and writing,
with a healthy dose of speech and debate thrown into the mix. Her personal reading choices
follow her eclectic interests: humor, mystery, literary fiction, spirituality, gardening, food, travel,
and the autobiographical essay.
In 2004, Mary decided to take an extended leave of absence from academia to stay at home with
her family. Since then, she has worked at editing fiction and nonfiction, and in her “spare time,”
she tinkers with her own fiction.
